Last Boston Bits

Today is our last day in Boston. We had a few things we were still hoping to see, so set off on the T.

Our primary goal was to visit the Christian Science Plaza. Our friend, Sue, had recently mentioned an interesting visit she and her husband had made here--principally, a look at a huge stained glass globe that they were able to walk through.

So we went in search of this glass globe. We found the Mapparium and took a tour of the 3-story-high globe. We saw the large publishing headquarters for the Christian Science Monitor. Then we visited the church. It is an impressive structure. We had a private 20-minute tour, which was quite interesting. I'll admit that I've never really understood Christian Science. I'm sure I still don't, but I understand a lot more than I did. My Grandfather, with whom my Mom and I lived during my entire childhood, was raised Christian Scientist. It was not his practice, but certainly his background. In honor of him, I thought it felt right to learn a little and perhaps better understand him.

The infinity-edge reflecting pool wasn't doing very much reflecting this morning.

We next visited the Prudential Center, essentially a gigantic shopping mall, and cooled down with some iced teas. Then we headed a ways north and went to the Public Garden. Never before have we seen the famous Swan Boats out on the lake. There was only one in action this afternoon, but it was fun to see. We strolled through the Garden, admiring the beautiful plantings and all the city life in action.

The Prudential tower, which has become a kind of landmark for us. If I can see the tower, I have a pretty good idea of where I am.

After freshening up, we headed out on the T toward our Back Bay dinner destination. (Please note here that we did not attempt another walk to dinner!) Just our luck, as soon as we boarded our train, it had what they called a "schedule adjustment." That meant we and another train sat for 10 minutes in the subway, going nowhere. Eventually we all started rolling again, and we were only a few minutes late for our reservation.

We had a lovely and perfect dinner in Back Bay. We love the architecture of this district, so the walk to and from the T was a treat too.

Emerging from the T station by our hotel, we heard a lot of music. Across the street, in the Commons, were two musicians putting on quite a performance. We decided to go over and join the crowd and spent 15-20 minutes watching and listening. Seemed a very city kind of thing and a fun touch to wrap up our time in Boston.

But Mother Nature had one more trick up her sleeve. We've been hearing threats of thunderstorms all week, but they all seemed to skirt around the edge of the city. Not so tonight. Lightning, thunder, and rain. While we had dutifully carried our two umbrellas to dinner--just in case--we were thankfully snug in our hotel room when the fireworks started to happen, so the rain devices weren't pressed into action. Probably put a stop to the party in the park, though.

A fond farewell to Boston. Tomorrow we head to Cape Cod, to start the next chapter in our trip. We haven't been there in years and are looking forward to seeing it again.
