Hello Cape Cod

We picked up a car Friday morning and made our way to the cape. Boston traffic is always challenging, and this was no exception. The traffic thinned as we got more distance between us and the city. But not as much as we'd anticipated.

When we reached Chatham, our destination, it was a maze of people and cars. Granted, it was Friday afternoon and there was a weekend at hand, but it still was much busier than we've ever seen it before.

Eventually, we figured out that this is a big wedding weekend. We kept bumping into weddings and parties all over the town. Brides and grooms being photographed, people in fancy dress. We also discovered that there are three festivals--Cranberry Arts and Music, Celebrate Our Waters, and Cape Cod Bird--this weekend, within 10 to 25 minutes drive from our inn.

This is shoulder season on the cape, and many businesses are already closed for the season, but I guess that all goes some way toward explaining all the people.

Our inn--the main house and the little Cape Cod house (the original house on the property) that contains our room and two others.

On Saturday, we chose to drive the historic and more scenic Route 6A. We did lots of meandering through the towns and beaches. It was a pretty day, and there were plenty of us out enjoying it. Once again, the charm of this area took hold of us. We have always loved the villages and the architecture, the ponds and boats. The salt marshes are a favorite, too. We're here a bit earlier in the year than when we've visited before, so the salt marshes haven't turned their fall colors yet, but they're still very appealing.

We rounded out our day on the legendary Chatham fishing pier. We arrived a bit late for the fleet of boats to be lined up to offload their treasure, but we still got to see several boats arrive and do their thing. It isn't the pretty part, seeing the gutted fish making their way to market. We both said we thought we'd skip fish for awhile. But that didn't last long, as I had some wonderful local cod for my dinner. The seafood is so good and so fresh here, that it's pretty hard to resist.

Lots of these guys hanging around the pier when the fishing fleet comes in.
